How Do We Get CAC Below LTV Sustainably in Fintech?

In fintech, sustainable improvement in the LTV:CAC ratio begins by strengthening the inputs that determine lifetime value—retention, monetization, and contribution margin—before increasing acquisition spend. The ratio is only meaningful when LTV is calculated on contribution margin rather than revenue and when CAC includes all costs required to acquire and activate a customer. Fintech unit economics differ from other sectors because of regulatory and compliance costs, fraud and charge-off risk, funding costs, and extended payback periods.

Why fintech differs from standard LTV:CAC models

Most publicly available LTV:CAC guidance is written for SaaS. Fintech introduces several factors that affect the calculation:

Applying a unit-economics approach

Work with a single customer cohort rather than blended results. Define the unit as an activated customer (funded account, first transaction, or first loan). Measure contribution margin after all direct variable costs. Track retention and repeat activity by cohort over time. Include every acquisition-related cost when calculating CAC. Revisit LTV only after the cohort has sufficient history.
